Nipple Piercing Information

Nipples can be pierced with a B.C.R or barbell, horizontal, vertical or at an angle.

Men's nipples are usually small and flat and therefore pierced slightly deeper through the areola. Women's nipples tend to be pierced at the base.

If a woman has recently given birth, it is highly recommended to wait until the baby is 3 months old before having her nipple pierced.

Breast feeding mothers should wait 3 months after finishing feeding before having their nipples pierced.

However women worry that nipple piercing will affect their ability to breast feed. Milk is produced in lactiferous/milk glands deep behind the piercing site. Many ducts lead to the nipple but very few are damaged by the piercing. According to many midwives, secure nipple jewellery can even be kept in during feeding! Women's nipple piercings sometimes take longer to heal than men's, due to fluctuating hormonal changes every month.

On the surface of the areola there are numerous sebaceous glands which lubricate the nipple. These will help to remove bacteria from the surface, thus aiding healing.
